Brideshead Revisted,

August 22 - September 4

BridesheadSuspenseful and beautifully mounted, Brideshead Revisited does a marvelous job condensing Evelyn Waugh’s novel. The film tells an evocative story of forbidden love and the loss of innocence set in the pre-WWII England. In Brideshead, Charles Ryder becomes entranced with the aristocratic and Catholic Marchmain family — first through the charming and provocative Sebastian Flyte and then his sophisticated sister, Julia. Emma Thompson stars as Lady Marchmain.

The film version of Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited transforms one of the quintessential novels of the 20th century into one of the grandest, most enriching films of 2008.
Rex Reed, New York Observer

Clever writing, strong performances and sumptuous production design make for a rich experience.
Claudia Puig, USA Today

Think of [Director] Jerrod’s briskly paced, stylish abridgment as a fine introduction to Waugh’s marvelously melancholy elegy. It brings these unforgettable characters to life again, and if it sends people back to the novel, and back to the classic TV series, all the better. There’s room for more than one Brideshead in this far less glamorous day and age.
David Anson, Newsweek

PG13, 2 hours and 15 minutes

Please note — Brideshead Revisted will be shown daily at 4:30 and 7PM

Up the Yangtze, September 5- 11

Up the Yangtze poignantly examines the effects of China’s massive Three Gorges Dam project on personal lives of two young people whose worlds are transformed by the construction. Beautifully photographed, the film provides a final snapshot of a rapidly disappearing cultural landscape and examines the tenuous balance between China’s rich cultural past and its modernized future.

In English and Mandarin
1 hour 33 minutes.

An astonishing documentary of culture clash and the erasure of history amid China’s economic miracle.
Stephen Holden, New York Times

Filmmaker Yung Chang finds a sad and beautiful way to glimpse the big picture of dislocation through an exquisitely poised small study.
Lisa Schwartzbaum, Entertainment Weekly (Grade A)

In his masterful and haunting documentary Up the Yangtze, Yung Chang shows the old China drowning helplessly under the weight of the new.
Ty Burr, Boston Globe

Bottle Shock, September 12 - 18

In 1976, a small California winery threw the wine world into a tizzy by besting exalted French wines at the now infamous, blind Paris wine tasting. Based on the true story, Bottle Shock chronicles the events surrounding “Judgment of Paris” as told through the eyes of father and son Jim and Bo Barrett. This film stars Bill Pullman and Alan Rickman.

Rated PG 13
1 hour and 48 minutes

It’s the kind of feel-good movie whose resolution is evident from the start, being based as it is on a true story. But that doesn’t make the journey any less interesting.
Claudia Puag, USA Today

Bottle Shock is something special: there’s magic in it.
Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

If movies were wine, Bottle Shock would be a pleasant varietal you’d find on the half-price shelf. Nothing fancy but tasty nonetheless.
Ty Burr, Boston Globe

Bottle Shock is more than the story. It is also about people who love their work, care about it with passion and talk about it with knowledge.
Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun Times
